Working to Make Canada Safer from Gun Violence

The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) announced the sixteen 2020 CMA Award recipients. This award program is an annual recognition of individuals who’ve made an exceptional contribution to medicine or the health care system.

Dr. Najma Ahmed, Vice-Chair, Education, Department of Surgery; Interim Surgeon-in-Chief, Unity Health Toronto, St. Michael’s Hospital was the recipient of the Sir Charles Tupper Award for Political Advocacy. After the Toronto Greektown shooting in July 2018, Najma formed a grassroots physicians group called Canadian Doctors for Protection from Guns (CDPG). The group called for gun control to be reframed as a public health issue, not a property matter, and Najma’s work on Bill C-71, on behalf of CDPG, was instrumental in the reclassification of 1500 types of semi-automatic rifles. Najma and CDPG are now working on a national strategy to strengthen Bill C-71 for semi-automatic handguns.
