Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce that Sean P. Cleary, (M.D, MSc, MPH, FRCSC, FACS) has been appointed as the Bernard and Ryna Langer Chair of the Division of General Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto, effective July 1st, 2023.
Dr. Cleary joins the Department of Surgery at U of T from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Rochester, Minnesota, USA. Before his appointment to the Mayo Clinic in 2017, Dr. Cleary was an Associate Professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and at the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto between the years 2007 and 2017.
In addition to his clinical and academic roles, Dr. Cleary has held several leadership positions, the most recent ones being Chair of the Division of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, Deputy Director of Disease Groups at the Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Chair of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Disease Group, all at the Mayo Clinic, USA.
Dr. Cleary holds a Bachelor of Science with Honours (BScH.) from Queen’s University, Kingston. He obtained his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from the University of Western Ontario, London and completed his Residency in General Surgery at the University of Toronto. He holds a Masters degree of Public Health from the Dalla Lana School of Public Health Sciences, as well as a Masters of Science from the Institute of Medical Sciences, Clinical Investigator Program at U of T. He completed fellowship training in Hepatobiliary Oncology and Transplantation at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Cleary is a member of several prestigious medical and professional associations, including the American Surgical Association, and has received many academic and research awards and grants throughout his career. He is known as an excellent clinical teacher to learners at all levels, and as a reliable, insightful and caring colleague.
