Dr. Matthew Guttman is a trauma and acute care surgeon at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He holds appointments as an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto and as a Scientist at the Sunnybrook Research Institute.

Dr. Guttman earned a B.Eng from McGill University, an MD from the University of Western Ontario, and a PhD in Clinical Epidemiology from the University of Toronto. He completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Toronto, during which he also graduated from the Clinician Investigator Program. He went on to complete a fellowship in trauma and acute care surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital and Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

His academic interest lies in the use of administrative health data to evaluate and improve trauma and emergency surgical systems. He has a particular interest in how these systems, originally designed for younger patients, can be adapted to better serve the needs of our growing older adult population.
