Jonathan Persitz

Dr. Persitz is a fellowship-trained Hand Surgeon and Clinician-Investigator within the Hand Program at the University Health Network.

Graduating Summa Cum Laude from medical school, Dr. Persitz subsequently completed his orthopaedic surgery residency in Yitzhak Shamir Medical Center in Israel, which is affiliated with Tel Aviv University. Throughout his training, he received multiple excellence awards and scholarships for his dedication to education and patient care.

During his training, Dr. Persitz engaged in international fellowship collaborations that honed his expertise. He received training at the Hand and Peripheral Nerves Department at Inselspital, Bern, Switzerland, and at the Hand & Wrist Department at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London, UK, where he had the privilege of collaborating with globally renowned hand surgeons. His residency culminated when he received the annual Israeli National Award and Scholarship for Outstanding Performance in the Orthopaedic Surgery Board Examination.

Dr. Persitz then pursued advanced training in upper extremity surgery through a fellowship at Yitzhak Shamir Medical Center in Israel, followed by fellowship in hand and peripheral nerve surgery at Toronto Western Hospital’s Hand Program in Toronto. These experiences solidified his focus on hand, wrist, and peripheral nerve surgery.

He is a strong advocate for personalized medical care, tailoring treatments to each patient's unique medical condition and functional requirements.

Dr. Persitz's enthusiasm for education, surgical innovation, and improving patient care is evident through his active engagement in research and education. His primary research focus is on optimizing clinical outcomes in acute surgical care and the post-traumatic reconstruction of distal radius fractures, as well as investigating and comparing different treatment approaches for base of thumb arthritis. This is made using extensive administrative health datasets to support his work. He is the author of numerous articles published in peer-reviewed journals, serves as a reviewer for orthopaedic and plastic surgery journals, and frequently presents lectures at both domestic and international conferences.

Currently pursuing a Master of Science degree at the University of Toronto's Institute of Medical Science, Dr. Persitz continues his research endeavors with a primary focus on enhancing quality of care and functional outcomes in relation to distal radius fractures.
