Ali Hage
MD, MPH, FRCSC
Dr. Ali Hage is a cardiac surgeon with advanced expertise in robotic cardiac surgery, complex mitral and tricuspid valve repair, and the surgical treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and structural heart disease. He is committed to providing individualized, patient-centred care grounded in careful clinical judgment, technical excellence, and close multidisciplinary collaboration.
Dr. Hage completed his medical degree at Université Laval, graduating with distinction. He subsequently completed his cardiac surgery residency at Western University and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. During residency, he also earned a Master of Public Health in Quantitative Methods from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, developing expertise in epidemiology, biostatistics, and clinical outcomes research.
Following residency, Dr. Hage pursued fellowship training in robotic cardiac surgery and complex mitral valve reconstruction at Cleveland Clinic under the mentorship of Dr. Marc Gillinov. He subsequently joined NYU Langone Health as an attending cardiac surgeon specializing in robotic procedures and advanced mitral valve repair, where he further developed his expertise within one of the world’s leading robotic mitral valve programs.
Dr. Hage’s academic work focuses on robotic cardiac surgery, mitral and tricuspid valve surgery, surgical innovation, and clinical outcomes research. He has made substantial contributions to the cardiac surgical literature, presented his work at leading scientific meetings, and received several awards and honors in recognition of his academic achievements.
His current research program centres on integrating artificial intelligence, computer vision, and advanced imaging into cardiac surgery, with a particular focus on robotic mitral valve procedures. This work includes the development of automated tools designed to provide real-time, AI-supported intraoperative assistance, with the goal of enhancing clinical decision-making, procedural consistency, surgical education, and patient outcomes. He is also interested in large registry-based outcomes research addressing important clinical questions in mitral and tricuspid valve surgery.
In addition to his clinical and research work, Dr. Hage is deeply committed to surgical education and mentorship and has played an active role in the training of residents and medical students. His long-term goal is to help establish a comprehensive robotic cardiac surgery program at UHN that integrates clinical excellence, multidisciplinary collaboration, education, research, and technological innovation.
