Dr. Mark Wheatcroft appointed as Interim Chair, Division of Vascular Surgery, University of Toronto

Dear Colleagues, 

I would like to inform you that Dr. Mark Wheatcroft has taken on the role of Interim Chair, Division of Vascular Surgery at the University of Toronto as of February 9, 2026.

Dr. Wheatcroft is a vascular and endovascular surgeon at St. Michael’s Hospital and an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery, University of Toronto.

Mark already serves in several major leadership roles. He is the Program Director for the Surgical Foundations Program that includes all residents in direct entry surgical training programs at the University of Toronto. He is Head of the Division of Vascular Surgery at St. Michael's Hospital, and Program Director for the University of Toronto International Fellowship in Vascular Surgery. He also leads the annual National Vascular Surgery Bootcamp.

Dr. Wheatcroft qualified from the University of Edinburgh (MBChB) in 1999 and trained in general and vascular surgery in Edinburgh, Sheffield and Doncaster, UK. In 2010, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and was also awarded a postgraduate research degree (MD) from the University of Sheffield. He completed his training with a year’s international fellowship at St. Michael’s Hospital & Toronto General Hospital, followed by a peripheral endovascular fellowship in Doncaster, UK. He was subsequently recruited to St. Michael's Hospital, with a full-time faculty position at the University of Toronto. 

Dr. Wheatcroft is passionate about teaching, whether in the classroom, clinic, or operating room, and has a particular interest in the use of simulation to teach surgeons technical and non-technical skills. He has received numerous awards for teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

I am very grateful to Mark for taking on this important role. I hope you will join me in congratulating him and working collaboratively with him as he leads the University Division of Vascular Surgery.
