The University of Toronto Department of Surgery congratulates 3 of its surgeons who were appointed to the Order of Canada in 2022
On June 29, 2022, her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, appointed to the Order of Canada:
Dr. Zane Cohen, C.M., O.Ont., a U of T alumnus and Professor of Surgery in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, for his innovative surgical methods in the field of colorectal surgery and for his leadership in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases.
On December 29, 2022, her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, appointed to the Order of Canada:
Dr. Allan Edward Gross, C.M., O.Ont., for his significant advancements in bone and cartilage transplantation as a renowned orthopaedic surgeon, educator, and researcher. Dr. Gross is an orthopedic surgeon at Mount Sinai Hospital and a Professor of Surgery in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, who specializes in lower extremity reconstruction. He earned his medical degree from U of T in 1962.

Dr. Richard D. Weisel, C.M., for his leadership as an academic cardiovascular surgeon and for his scientific contributions to the field. Dr. Weisel is a scientist emeritus at Toronto General Hospital Research Institute, University Health Network, and a Professor of Surgery in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Weisel is renowned for his work in the fields of cell transplantation, myocardial protection and vascular biology.
The Order of Canada is one of Canada’s highest honours, recognizing individuals across different sectors, who have made extraordinary contributions to the nation. Appointments are made by the governor general on the recommendation of the Advisory Council for the Order of Canada. The Order’s motto is “DESIDERANTES MELIOREM PATRIAM”, which translates to “They desire a better country”.
