Dr. Georges Azzie, a paediatric general surgeon at the Hospital for Sick Children, has been a passionate advocate for improving the clinical and medical education infrastructures that are available in Botswana, South Africa and Namibia for close to 4 decades.
His approach to global surgery initiatives focuses on his familiarizing himself with local surgical cultures before doing anything else. This allows him an opportunity to conduct a needs analysis and create unique, sustainable programs for each geographic region that he frequents.
He has utilized his expertise and connections in the field of TELESIMULATION to provide and use high technology at low cost to teach laparoscopic surgical skills in Botswana. The success of this program has resulted in the development of other skills acquisition programs (e.g. intra-osseous resuscitation).
His long-standing relationships with governments and schools of medicine have leveraged his ability to establish international academic curricula that have effectively empowered local communities in resource-poor communities.
By developing new educational programs, training countless medical doctors, up-skilling local surgeons, underscoring the importance of scholarly research and serving as a mentor to countless surgical interest groups, Dr. Azzie is creating a new generation of global surgery leaders.
